Differences Between Fire-Retardant Panels and Melamine Panels?

Update:27 Aug 2025

Many people struggle to tell fire-retardant panels and melamine panels apart. Their appearances are so similar that it is difficult for non-professionals to distinguish them with the naked eye.
However, there are practical ways to tell these two types of panels apart.
Although fire-retardant panels and melamine panels look alike, their thickness and internal structures differ. Fire-retardant panels typically have a three-layer facing, while melamine panels usually have a single-layer or double-layer facing. As a result, fire-retardant panels are slightly thicker—and this extra thickness also enhances their wear resistance and impact resistance.
The manufacturing process of fire-retardant panels is more complex than that of melamine panels. Fire-retardant panels need to be pressed under high temperature and high pressure, involving intricate procedures. Naturally, their prices are relatively higher, with market prices generally exceeding 100 yuan per unit. If someone offers fire-retardant panels at a price far below the market average, it is advisable to be cautious.
Due to their fire-resistant requirements, fire-retardant panels are widely used in places with high fire protection standards, especially in important public venues. In contrast, melamine panels are more commonly used in home decoration, particularly for the finishing of furniture and cabinets. However, since melamine panels contain certain toxic and harmful substances, they fail to meet environmental protection standards and may pose potential risks to human health.
